TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND APPLICATIONS
S355MC is a low-alloy, high yield strength structural steel, thermomechanically rolled according to EN 10149-2.
It is designed for cold-forming applications requiring good mechanical strength, weldability, and structural weight reduction.
It is a microalloyed, low-carbon steel with a fine-grain structure obtained through controlled rolling.
Its main alloying elements are carbon, manganese, and silicon, complemented with microalloying elements such as niobium, vanadium, and titanium, which improve grain refinement and mechanical performance.
It combines a guaranteed minimum yield strength of 355 MPa with good ductility, toughness, and dynamic load behavior.
Particularly suitable for cold-formed structural parts, welded components, profiles, frames, machinery, chassis, supports, crane elements, lightweight structures, and assemblies where weight reduction is required without losing load-bearing capacity.
DELIVERY CONDITION
S355MC steels are thermomechanically produced in coils and delivered as cut sheets.
Surface finish:
According to EN 10163-2 Class A, subclass 3
Dimensional tolerances:
Flatness exceeding EN 10051
Dimensions according to EN 10051
WELDING AND OXYCUTTING
S355MC has excellent weldability thanks to its low carbon content and low carbon equivalent, with a typical CEV around 0.17 %.
Suitable for MIG/MAG, TIG, and manual arc welding with standard structural consumables, e.g., ER70S-6 or equivalents.
For thicker sections, moderate preheating may be recommended depending on structural restraint. Heat input should be controlled to avoid excessive microstructure alteration.
FORMING
Specifically designed for cold forming. Suitable for bending, deep drawing, and profiling with reduced minimum radii depending on thickness.
The minimum transverse bending radius is generally 2.05 x t for typical thicknesses.
Work hardening during severe operations should be considered.
Moderate machinability, approximately 60% compared to an easily machinable steel such as AISI 1212.
Use carbide tools and cutting parameters suitable for its mechanical strength.
